The 6th part of the Mario Kart Throughout the Ages Series, where I look back and catalog the features and changes throughout each and every Mario Kart game (minus the GP Series), as a celebration of the upcoming Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U.  So, it's time to drive on to our next game of the series.

Prepare for the cheating AI!

Mario Kart Wii:

Introduced Features:
  • Trick System, by flicking the wiimote (or pressing a directional button on the d-pad) you can do a trick in mid air, when you land, you get a boost of speed like a mini turbo.
  • Bikes: Bikes trade in a level 2 mini turbo to a level 1 mini turbo in exchange in performing wheelies for extra speed and being able to drift inside corners.
  • New Point Spread System, this time increasing 1st place points to 15.
  • Increased player count from 8 to 12.
  • Improved Wi-fi function, from track voting to being able to battle online.
  • New Items: Mega Mushroom, grow tall, fast, and invulnerable for a short period of time to run over enemies. POW Block, spin out all enemies on the course and the Lightning Cloud, AKA: Herpes Cloud, you get a lightning cloud that makes you go faster, but hold it for too long and you get lightninged. Pass it off to other players.
  • Wii Wheel, a peripheral made for Mario Kart wii, new players like it, veterans don't.
  • Improved Mini Turbos, now it's time based rather than waggle based.
  • Though not official, through hacked wii's, you can make custom courses and cups, thus extending replay life by a crap ton.

Things that MKWii Shares with other Mario Karts:

12 Player races and bikes will return in Mario Kart 8.


Characters:

By far the biggest character roster in Mario Kart history, along with the characters from other mario kart games (minus R.O.B, paratroopa and Petey Piranha), there's a buttload of new characters! Well, 6 new characters. Rosalina (Heart), Dry Bowser, Funky Kong, Baby Daisy (really?) Baby Peach and the Mii.


Trivia:

Originally, Petey, Paratroopa and Hammer Brother was going to be in Mario Kart wii, but got removed for other characters.


Final Thoughts:

Despite making good steps forward, I don't like Mario Kart Wii as much as the others, even with Rosalina.  The AI is at it's worst here, a blend of rubber band AI and actually quite smart AI, which means playing 150cc and Mirror Mode can be a true test of patience and anger management.

Still, it's a pretty solid game.
